Veneers
Veneers are thin porcelain shells that cover the front and often the sides of the teeth. They completely conceal the visible portion of the tooth, and they can immediately whiten and straighten the look of the teeth while obscuring imperfections. Many porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, so whitening concerns become a thing of the past.
Crowns
Dental crowns are restorations that cover the entire outer portion of the tooth, from the chewing surface to the gum line. They may be made from metal, composite, porcelain, zirconia or some combination of these elements. They fortify the tooth against damage and provide solid aesthetics.
The Distinction
The two treatments do some of the same things, and can be made from the same materials in many cases. The treatment process can also be very similar. Veneers are generally used as more of a cosmetic treatment, however, while crowns handle most cases where repairs of damage or decay are needed. Some people do use crowns for purely aesthetic purposes, though – the largest true distinction between the two is that veneers only cover the front or sides of the tooth, while crowns cover the entire thing.
